Rocky Balboa is a 2006 American sports drama film written, directed by, and starring Sylvester Stallone. It is the sequel to Rocky V (1990) and the sixth installment in the Rocky film series. It also stars Burt Young and Antonio Tarver. In the film, Rocky Balboa (Stallone), now an aging small restaurant owner, is challenged to an exhibition fight by hothead young boxer Mason Dixon (Tarver).
Development for a sixth Rocky film began after Stallone expressed regret of the outcome of Rocky V, which was viewed as a disappointing conclusion to the end of the franchise. Rocky Balboa includes references to characters and objects from previous installments, and Stallone was inspired by recent personal struggles and triumphs when writing the film. It is Stallone's first directorial effort since Rocky IV (1985) and is Tarver's only feature film appearance. Principal photography began in December 2005 and lasted until January 2006, with filming locations including Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. In contrast to previous entries in the franchise, the fight choreography in Rocky Balboa was less scripted, featuring real punches thrown by Stallone and Tarver.
Rocky Balboa was theatrically released by MGM Distribution Co. in North America and 20th Century Fox internationally on December 20, 2006, thirty years after the release of the first film. Rocky Balboa received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for its screenplay, Stallone's performance, and heartfelt exploration of Balboa's character, with many critics calling it a significant improvement over its predecessor, and many labelling the film one of the best entries in the franchise. It grossed over $156 million worldwide, subverting expectations to rebound from the box office performance of its predecessor. A spin-off, Creed, was released in 2015 and kickstarted its own series, while a seventh mainline Rocky film is in development.

SYNOPSIS: In the past 15 years (1990-2005) since the end of the last Rocky movie, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stalone) is a retired boxer who owns an Italian themed restaurant in Philadelphia named after his beloved wife Adrian who passed in 2002. Their son, Robert (Milo Ventimiglia), has entered the corporate world; Robert feels resentment about living in the shadow of his famous father.
Rocky meets Marie, bartender at, Lucky Seven tavern, Back in 1975 during the first Rocky movie, she was a young teenager who Rocky admonished her to quit smoking. Rocky befriends Marie and tries to provide a role model for Steps. When his assistant at the restaurant goes on maternity leave, he invites Marie to work there as the hostess and barmaid.
ESPN televises a computer simulation of a fight pitting Rocky (in his prime) against the current Heavyweight champion, Mason "The Line" Dixon (Antonio Tarver). Rocky wants to box again, but on a small scale. Paulie doesn't want to be part of it. Pennsylvania Athletic Commission, grants him a license when Rokcy accuses them of acting in bad faith, with intention of refusing license even after he passed all tests.
Dixon's managers urge him to fight Rocky as nobody wants to see Dixon fight the nobody's anymore. When they speak to Rocky, Marie encourages him to take his last shot. Robert is pissed, but Rocky confronts him: "Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! Now if you know what you're worth then go out and get what you're worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain't you! You're better than that!"
Robert quits job & joins Rocky. Tony is the trainer & strategy is to develop hard punches "hurt bombs" to knock Dixon out early. The fight itself starts slowly - Rocky is thrown off balance by Dixon's speed. In second round that Rocky starts to do some damage. After Rocky is knocked down twice by Dixon, a hook to Rocky's body breaks Dixon's left hand, and allows Rocky to charge in and throw some devastating punches.
Rocky gives it as hard as he gets & the 2 champions go toe to toe for 10 full rounds. Rocky lands the last punch & Dixon wins a split decision. During the end credits, there is an acknowledgment of the iconic status the Rocky series has achieved, through a montage of people following in Rocky's footsteps, charging up the front steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
