Partai Buruh is one of the political parties that plays an important role in the Indonesian political arena. This party was founded on 28 August 1998, about 3 months after the 2nd President of the Republic of Indonesia Soeharto was overthrown due to the Reformation events of 21 May 1998. At first, this party used the name "National Labor Party" led by Muchtar Pakpahan (late) and participated in 1999 election with serial number 37.

Then, in the 2004 election, this party changed its name to "Social Democratic Labor Party" with serial number 2. In the 2009 election, this party was again transformed into serial number 44.

After being absent from the elections in 2014 and 2019, this party is again active in national politics through the declaration of the results of the congress which was held on 4-5 October 2021 in Jakarta. The congress was attended by the 4 largest trade union confederations and around 50 national level trade union federations, teacher and honorary worker forums, as well as farmers and fishermen unions.

At that time, Said Iqbal was appointed President of the Labor Party, who was a figure from various elements of trade union organizations, such as FSPMI, ORI-KSPSI, SPI, KPBI, ​​RRI Elements of FSP KEP, RRI Elements of FSP FARKES Reform, FPTKHSI, and GPI.

To date, this party has regional representatives in 34 provinces, 514 representatives at the district/city level, and more than 6,000 representatives at the sub-district level. This party also prioritizes women's representation in its management, with more than 30% of its management being women.

On December 14 2022, the Labor Party was officially declared qualified to participate in the 2024 elections and received serial number 6 on the day of the serial number draw at the central KPU office, Jakarta. The party identifies itself as a party that fights for the rights to a decent living welfare for all Indonesian people.
